Video Doorbells

The job seeing the doorstep before opening it

Affiliate links. A qualifying purchase earns this site a commission at no extra cost to you, and does not affect what is written here. See Affiliate Disclosure.

A doorbell camera does two jobs that have nothing to do with each other. The first is Detect: it tells you somebody is at the door, right now, whether or not you are home. The second is Document: it keeps a record of the doorstep. Most listings sell the second and most households use the first. Both depend on the camera being aimed at the part of the porch where people and parcels actually are.

Ordering starts with what happens to the footage, then with power, because a doorbell you have to take down and charge every six weeks is a doorbell that spends part of the year on a kitchen counter. Mounts are kept in their own group; a bracket is not a doorbell.

eufy Video Doorbell E340, 2K

2K dual-camera doorbell, listing states 8 GB local storage

A dual-camera doorbell that watches the face and the doorstep at the same time, wired or on battery, with color night vision, two-way talk and AI motion and package detection. The listing states 8 GB of local storage and no subscription. Two lenses matter because a single wide lens either shows a visitor or shows the parcel by their feet, rarely both.

  • Second lens covers the doorstep, not just the visitor
  • Listing states 8 GB local storage and no subscription
  • Runs wired or on battery, so wiring is not a blocker
  • Package detection is a separate alert from person detection
  • Two cameras means a taller unit that needs frame space
  • Battery mode needs periodic removal and charging
  • Local storage lives at the door, where the camera is

Best for A front door that takes deliveries and has nowhere to run a new cable.

Ring Battery Doorbell 2K

2K battery doorbell, listing states up to 6x zoom

A battery doorbell with 2K wide-angle video, two-way talk, and what the listing describes as up to 6x enhanced zoom. Battery power is the reason most renters and most 1930s houses can have a doorbell camera at all. Zoom on a wide lens is a crop, so treat it as a way to read a face rather than a license plate.

  • Runs on its own battery with no wiring work
  • Listing states 2K wide-angle video
  • Listing states up to 6x enhanced zoom
  • Removable battery, so the unit stays on the wall while charging
  • Battery needs recharging on a schedule you have to remember
  • Zoom on a wide lens is a crop, not extra detail
  • Check the listing for what recorded history requires

Best for A rented front door or a house with no doorbell wiring at all.

Arlo Video Doorbell 2K, 2nd Gen

2K doorbell, wired or battery, package detection

A 2K doorbell that runs wired or on battery, with package and person detection, night vision and two-way audio. The listing states one month of the Secure plan is included, which is a trial rather than a permanent arrangement. Decide what happens in month two before you mount it.

  • Runs wired or on battery
  • Separates package detection from person detection
  • Listing states one month of Secure plan included
  • 2K sensor for reading a face at the door
  • The included plan period is a trial, not a permanent state
  • Recorded history depends on plan terms you should read
  • Battery mode adds a charging routine

Best for A doorstep with regular deliveries where you want package alerts split out.

Tapo D210 Wireless Video Doorbell, 2K

Tapo D210 Wireless Video Doorbell, 2K

2K wireless doorbell with chime, 160 degree view per listing

A wireless 2K doorbell that ships with its own chime, listed with a 160 degree ultra-wide view. A very wide view is what catches a parcel left against the wall rather than centered on the mat. Including the chime means the doorbell still rings if the phone is face-down on a sofa.

  • Chime included, so the doorbell still rings inside
  • Listing states 160 degree ultra-wide view
  • Wireless mounting with no transformer needed
  • 2K sensor on a wide lens
  • Very wide lenses stretch faces at the edge of frame
  • Battery needs recharging periodically
  • Chime occupies an outlet indoors

Best for A narrow porch where a standard lens would miss the parcel entirely.

Wyze Battery Video Doorbell

Wyze Battery Video Doorbell

1536x1536 head-to-toe doorbell, wired or battery

A doorbell with a square 1:1 sensor listed at 1536 by 1536, giving a head-to-toe view rather than a letterbox one, with color night vision and two-way audio. It runs wired or on battery. The square frame is the point: it shows the visitor and what is at their feet in one image.

  • Square 1:1 frame shows visitor and doorstep together
  • Runs wired or on battery
  • Color night vision rather than gray-scale
  • Two-way audio built in
  • A square frame trims the width of a wide porch
  • Battery mode adds a charging routine
  • Check the listing for what recorded history requires

Best for A doorstep where parcels get left low against the door itself.

Blink Video Doorbell with Sync Module Core

Blink Video Doorbell with Sync Module Core

HD battery doorbell, listing states two-year battery life

A battery doorbell with a head-to-toe HD view, bundled with a sync module, and listed with a two-year battery life. A two-year figure is the listing manufacturer speaking about ideal conditions, not a guarantee about a cold north-facing porch. Even discounted, it is the longest battery interval claimed by anything here.

  • Listing states two-year battery life
  • Sync module included rather than bought separately
  • Head-to-toe view covers the doorstep
  • Straightforward mounting with no wiring
  • Battery figures on any listing assume light use and mild weather
  • HD rather than the 2K sensors elsewhere in this group
  • The sync module needs a place and a power outlet indoors

Best for A quiet doorway where you would rather not think about batteries.

Ring Battery Doorbell

Ring Battery Doorbell

HD battery doorbell, head-to-toe view

The plainest battery doorbell in the Ring line here, with head-to-toe video, live view, two-way talk and motion alerts. There is no enhanced zoom and no 2K claim on the listing. It is the option to pick when the job is simply seeing who is there before opening the door.

  • Head-to-toe video covers the visitor and the mat
  • No wiring required
  • Live view without waiting for a clip
  • Fewest settings to get wrong of the Ring doorbells here
  • No 2K or zoom claim on the listing
  • Battery needs recharging periodically
  • Check the listing for what recorded history requires

Best for A first doorbell camera where the only job is seeing the visitor.

Google Nest Doorbell, Wired 3rd Gen, 2K

2K HDR wired doorbell, color night vision

A wired doorbell with 2K HDR video, intelligent alerts, color night vision and two-way audio, working with Google Home. HDR is the specification that matters at a doorway, where the visitor is in shadow and the street behind them is not. Being wired means no battery to pull down every few weeks.

  • Listing states 2K HDR, which suits a backlit doorway
  • Wired, so there is no battery cycle to manage
  • Color night vision rather than gray-scale
  • Sits in Google Home alongside other devices
  • Needs existing doorbell wiring and a suitable transformer
  • Ties the doorstep to one ecosystem
  • Check the listing for what recorded history requires

Best for A house with working doorbell wiring and a front door that faces the sun.

Ring Wired Doorbell 2K

Ring Wired Doorbell 2K

2K wired doorbell, listing states up to 6x zoom

The wired version of the 2K Ring doorbell, with wide-angle video, two-way talk and what the listing describes as up to 6x enhanced zoom. Wired removes the only recurring chore a battery doorbell has. It also removes the option, so confirm there is a transformer behind the button before ordering.

  • No battery cycle to manage
  • Listing states 2K wide-angle video
  • Listing states up to 6x enhanced zoom
  • Constant power means it is always awake
  • Requires existing doorbell wiring and a suitable transformer
  • Not an option for most rented entrances
  • Check the listing for what recorded history requires

Best for An owned house with a working wired chime already in place.

Mounts and accessories

KIMILAR Anti-Theft Doorbell Mount

KIMILAR Anti-Theft Doorbell Mount

Adjustable doorbell mounting bracket

An adjustable mounting bracket rather than a doorbell, listed as compatible with Ring and Blink wireless doorbells and explicitly not for the Blink 2nd Gen. Brackets solve a real problem: a doorbell aimed at a hedge sees a hedge. Check the exact model against the listing before ordering, because the exclusions are specific.

  • Adjustable angle fixes a doorbell aimed at the wrong thing
  • Listing states compatibility with Ring and Blink wireless doorbells
  • Cheaper than moving the doorbell to a different wall
  • Lets a side-facing entrance point down the approach path
  • Listing states it is not for the Blink 2nd Gen
  • A bracket adds depth, which can foul a narrow door frame
  • It is a mount, not security hardware

Best for A doorbell mounted on an angled porch wall that faces the wrong way.

Why those badges

Each badge stands on something stated in the listing or countable in the data, not on a general impression.

  • 8 GB on board, per the listing โ€” eufy Video Doorbell E340, 2K. It is the only doorbell here whose listing states a specific quantity of built-in local storage and no subscription requirement.
  • HDR against a bright sky โ€” Google Nest Doorbell, Wired 3rd Gen, 2K. HDR is listed for this doorbell only, and a doorway backlit by daylight is where doorbell footage most often fails.
  • Listing states up to 6x zoom โ€” Ring Battery Doorbell 2K. Enhanced zoom up to 6x is stated on this listing and on one other Ring model here; among battery units it is the only one.

Questions people actually ask

Wired or battery?

Wired removes the charging routine and keeps the camera awake, but it needs existing bell wiring and a transformer that suits the unit. Battery works anywhere, including rentals, at the cost of taking the unit down periodically. If you are unsure whether your wiring is suitable, that is a question for an electrician rather than a listing.

Do I need a subscription?

Some of these listings state local storage with no subscription; others describe cloud history as part of a plan. We do not quote plan prices anywhere on this site because they change. The table above records what each listing says about where footage goes, which is the part that stays true.

Does a video doorbell stop package theft?

It records package theft. That is a different thing, and worth being clear about before spending. The measures that change the outcome are the ones that stop a parcel sitting visible on a step for six hours: a delivery instruction, a locker, a neighbor, a scheduled window.

My doorbell faces a wall instead of the path. What now?

An angled mounting bracket turns the unit toward the approach without moving it to a different wall. Check the compatibility statement on the bracket listing against your exact doorbell model, because the exclusions are specific and a bracket that does not fit is a bracket that goes back.
